A wood study of a snake. The coiled serpent, preparing for a strike at any moment. The snake in netsuke have similar shapes regardless of the region they were made. The animal naturally lends itself well to function. Our snake has a very unusual scale treatment and the underside contrasts with this treatment very well. The eyes, inlaid in mother of pearl and dark horn create an alert feel to the animal.
Anonymous. Probably Tsu. Last half of the 19th Century.
