The making of Dolls is an ancient tradition in Japan. The materials used to produce Dolls is as varied as their meaning. Ours is related to the dangers experienced by expectant Mothers during childbirth. The Monkey believed to have talismanic qualities against the Mothers death. The abstract shape may also relate to another well known subject for Netsuke, the sleeping Chajin (Tea Master).
